LGB 2040 Brown Crocodile Electric Locomotive

LGB 2040 Brown Crocodile Locomotive, Electric Style

Made from 1978 on.  C+C (C'C') Swiss Rhaetian Railway (RhB) Ge 6/6 "baby crocodile" pantograph locomotive.  Modeled after the largest standard locomotive series of the RhB, used as a heavy universal pantograph locomotive for goods and passenger traffic over mountainous track.  Although some early catalog photos show factory prototype of 2030/3 pantograph locomotives, they were never produced.  This fact was confirmed by Rolf Richter.  The earliest accurate photo of the 2040, version A, appeared on the back cover of Depesche #36 from the Fall of 1978.  Three piece articulated body, each truck is motorized.  Three headlamps on front and rear.  One headlamp on each side functions as a taillight.  Early production versions of this unit had dual silver unpainted 2030/3 pantographs, which were later replaced by the more prototypically correct silver painted 2040/3 pantographs.

See 2140 & 22400 for comparisons.
Length: 560 mm

A series: 1978. Uncataloged, semigloss medium brown finish with light gray roof with lighter gray cat walks.  Dual silver unpainted steel pantographs.  Brown roof insulators. Red wheels. Black grab irons on main cab. Gray eccentric drive centers with or without black decal (may have come in separate box and most were shipped without the decals).  Some have been reported with dual silver painted brass single contact bar pantographs.  Some have also been reported with dual red painted single contact bar pantographs, the factory insists that the production model had dual silver painted brass or unpainted steel single contact bar pantographs.  The confusion stems from the prototype catalog photos, which depict this version with red pantographs.  Since the red pantographs were sold separately, they may be easily changed and are not original to the locomotive, according to LGB.

B series: 1978.  Uncataloged, same as A, but catwalks are darker than roof.  Red or green insulators.  Black decal is usually present on the gray eccentric drive centers.  Dual single contact bar pantographs silver painted brass.

C series: 1979-80.  Same as B, but with dual painted silver brass double contact bars.

D series: 1981-84.  Same as C, but with red roof insulators, yellow grab irons on main body, side windows on main body blocked out with white.  Dark gray catwalks and black wheels.

E series: 1985.  Same as D, but with orange-brown body, plastic drive rods, lower headlamps with gold bezel rings.

F series: 1986-94.  Same as E, but with tan-brown painted body, silver matte roof, brown catwalks, green painted roof insulators.

G series: 1995-.  Same as F, but with dyed rust orange-brown body.
